How soldiers raided Baga - Residents
« on: May 02, 2013, 03:20:22 PM »
RESIDENTS of Baga have narrated how soldiers allegedly raided the community after Boko Haram members killed a soldier and injured others.

Residents told the Human Rights Watch (HRW) that soldiers ransacked the town after the Boko Haram militant  group attacked a military patrol, killing a soldier.

Community leaders that spoke with HRW said that immediately after the attack, they counted 2,000 burned houses and 183 bodies while satellite images of the town analysed by HRW corroborate these accounts and identified 2,275 destroyed buildings, the vast majority likely residences, with another 125 severely damaged.
the HRW has, therefore, asked the Federal Government to thoroughly  investigate allegations that soldiers carried out widespread destruction and killing in the town of Baga based on accounts of witnesses.

Speaking on the issue, Daniel Bekele, the Africa Director at HRW, said, “the Nigerian military has a duty to protect itself and the population from the Boko Haram attacks, but the evidence indicates that it engaged more in destruction than in protection.
“The glaring discrepancies between the facts on the ground and statements by senior military officials raise concerns that they tried to cover up military abuses.”

Since the attack, the military has restricted journalists’ access to Baga, a remote fishing community on the shores of Lake Chad, 200 kilometres northeast of the city of Maiduguri, while the Boko Haram sect has destroyed mobile telephone towers in the area, claiming that security services used mobile phones to track down its members, making communication particularly difficult for survivors of the attack.
